This guy is a good 12 inches long. The biggest alligator lizard I have ever seen. |

“It is the corruption of truth, the abandonment of the due process law. It is the use of the big lie and the unfounded accusation against any citizen in the name of Americanism or security. It is the rise to power of the demagogue who lives on untruth; it is the spreading of fear and the destruction of faith in every level of society.”
Truman, in 1953, after he left the presidency, speaking of McCarthyism.
"We need to confront honestly the issue of scale. Bigness has a charm and a drama that are seductive, especially to politicians and financiers; but bigness promotes greed, indifference, and damage, and often bigness is not necessary. You may need a large corporation to run an airline or to manufacture cars, but you don't need a large corporation to raise a chicken or a hog. You don't need a large corporation to process local food or local timber and to market it locally." Wendell Berry
Nature is, above all, profligate. Don’t believe them when they tell you how economical and thrifty nature is, whose leaves return to the soil.
Wouldn’t it be cheaper to leave them on the tree in the first place?~ Annie Dillard
In walking, just walk. In sitting, just sit. Above all, don't wobble. Zen saying
"I don't take pictures as much these days, but that doesn't mean that things don't look as beautiful to me as they once did." George Andrus, 95, photographer, singer and movie maker.
I had never heard of alligator lizards. How big can they get? What do they eat? Ok I should do my own research. They may be creepy but they are kind of cool also.
ReplyDeleteTwelve inches is about their maximum length including their tail. Which they can lose if something grabs on to it. Once it comes off, it continues to twitch for several minutes. Doesn't that give you the creeps? Their tail grows back but never gets as long as the original tail.
ReplyDeleteI have read that they eat bugs and spiders, pretty much eat the same things that other lizards eat, so I have no clue why they need that big mouth and mean teeth. If you find out anything different, let me know.
hi aunt marilyn,

Matt, Glad you like it. They lose their skins just like snakes do. Did I give you an alligator skin that you scared your mama with?
